Living in South Central Los Angeles has been a complete change up to my hometown. Being born and raised in Sammamish, Washington, life is at a lot slower pace. Sammnamish is a small town, where most people know eachother on a first name basis. My switch from Sammamish to Los Angeles was the biggest culture shock I had ever experienced in my life.
First of all, the weather is something i've never experienced in my life. Seattle has a statistic that factually states it rains technically 75 percent of the year. When you grow up in a weather like that you don't know that it is bad until you leave. Not until after my freshman year did I truly understand the affects of seasonal depression.
On top of the weather aspect, the things you see daily is unbelievable. The amount of homeless interactions and unhinged things I see when living on Wes 28th St has desensitized me from life. The experience only adds to what college is to be and I can't say that I am not happy the way it is.
Ha! Hi Charlie! As an LA native, your blog post had me chuckling–I’ve been immersed in this quirky city for so long that I didn’t realize how jarring of a culture shock it could be for the rest of the USC student population! Yes, our weather is amazing (always sunny, no seasons, just how I like it); yes, our restaurant scene is unbelievable; and unfortunately, yes, we have the nation’s largest homeless population. But for all of its strengths and faults, I’m glad you’ve learned to love LA just as much as I do!
ReplyDeleteHi Charnold. It is a big switch and I think you have done a great job at changing. Who doesnt love 75 degree weather. Keep up the good work!
ReplyDeleteHi Charlie, thank you for the post. I have never considered this difference considering I am from Los Angeles. I did some research on Sammamish because I have never heard of that locations and it looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteHey Charlie, sounds like the transition to LA has been one hell of a an experience. As someone who grew up in California, I completely understand how a lot of these things come as a shocker. I do hope that much of these things adds to your experience being here, especially the weather.
